Charm Bracelets

Charm bracelets with multiple charms have been around almost as long as charms themselves. After all, if wearing a single charm can bring good fortune or offer protection then it would seem to follow that wearing several would bring even greater benefits.

A traditional charm bracelet was - and still is - simply a way of wearing multiple charms at the same time. These are usually hung off of a bracelet although the same effect is often obtained with a necklace. You can either buy the bracelets pre-populated with charms or buy a plain bracelet first and then add charms later.

When combining charms it would seem common sense to choose those which work together symbolically - or at the very least to ensure that there are no clashes. However many people today simply buy a new charm because they like the look of it, without considering the symbolism. That said, some people do try to at least develop a charm theme.

Any favourite charm can be hung from the bracelet and the charms can be made of any material (gold and sterling silver are perennial favourites). Charms based around birthstones are also popular.

History

The modern interest in charm bracelets can be traced back to Queen Victoria who popularised the fashion by wearing charms containing photos or other reminders of her family.

The Italian charm bracelet is a relatively modern innovation. Instead of individual charms hanging from a metal band they snap on top of it. This allows for a "quick change" of design and a look that can be either bold or subtle according to mood and situation.
