The Valknutr Symbol

The Valknutr (also known as Valknut or Valknot) is an ancient Norse symbol associated with the great god Odin. It has become a popular modern charm symbol and many products you can buy also include lunar symbolism.

What Is The Valknutr?

The Valknutr is a symbol consisting of three interlinked triangles. The symbol can be drawn either as as three distinct triangles or as a single twisted band ("unicursal").

The name comes from the same source as valkyrie - the Norse word valr, fallen warriors. However this name is a modern invention many centuries after the original use of the symbol and its original name is lost in time. Alternative modern names include Odin's Knot, Hrungnir's Heart and the Star of Wotan.

Symbolism

The Valknutr is thought to symbolise the strength and power of Odin, especially in battle. It was believed to inspire friendly warriors and strike fear and panic into the enemy.

The version of the symbol formed from three interlocking triangles has many complex associatons - the number 3 is important in many traditions. Odin himself was said to have a triple nature and the Norse myths divided the cosmos into three parts.

Three triangles produce nine points - the number 9 is again frequently attributed important symbolic significance. In particular it can be connected with the Nine Worlds which in Norse mythology spring from the world tree Yggdrasil.

Any unicursal symbol can be seen as a variety of protective circle and the version of the Valknutr drawn as a single line is sometimes used as a talisman of protection against evil spirits.

A modern Valknutr charm you can buy today will sometimes include lunar symbolism. This can be seen as representative of the Norse goddess Freya who taught Odin his magical skills.
