Kobolds - Creatures of Folklore and GamingMyth and LegendThe Kobold of folklore was a spirit of Germanic origin. It is sometimes likened to the Scottish Brownie or English Hobgoblin and as such might be considered one of the fey folk.
What is a Kobold? The Kobold of Germanic tradition was a household spirit. It was rarely seen but when it was appeared to be a small and wrinkled humanoid, sometimes with a tail. The Kobold could either be benefic or spiteful depending on its mood and how it was treated. It is said it would choose a possible household then set trials for the family. If they responded to its satisfaction, the Kobold would move into their home. Once with the family then the Koold would perform simple household tasks for them such as drawing water, chopping wood and tidying up. The presence of a Kobold is also said to benefit any animals belonging to the house - obviously of great benefit to a farmer. In exchange for these services the family would leave out food and milk for the Kobold. If they failed to do this or to treat him with respect then the Kobold would turn nasty and take revenge. This could range from poltergeist style pranks to the spoiling of milk and food and, if the Kobold was really annoyed, causing serious accidents.
Role Playing GamesToday the Kobold is probably best known as a creature in role-playing games (RPGs or FRP games), in particular Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). They are usually presented as low level monsters who make suitable opponents for novice adventurers. They are portayed as small, vicious humanoid creatures that often dwell underground and attack in packs. In D&D Kobolds are of Lawful Evil alignment and are often found serving dragons.
