Midge NettingUsing a midge net isn't the most attractive form of midge repellent however it does have the advantages of being cheap, effective and chemical free. Some people consider netting an essential when walking, camping or fishing in the Scottish Highlands. The midge net is essentially a version of the well known mosquito net. However because of the smaller size of midges it will usually be made of a finer mesh. It works by the simple method of preventing the midges from passing through and reaching human flesh. The point about mesh size is worth repeating: because midges are so small, insect netting sold to keep out - for example - mosquitos might not be any use against midges. Be sure to buy insect netting with a very fine mesh, preferrably a product that is designed specifically for dealing with midges. Midge netting is available in many forms. A large net piece can be used to protect the entrance to a tent. One reported disadvantage of these is that because the fine mesh inhibits air flow they can make tents uncomfortably warm in a very hot summer. Then again, this is Scotland we're talking about! For the day time, hats with midge netting attached to protect the face are very popular. You can buy traditional style baseball caps or fishing hats with midge netting attached to them. They may not look cool, but then nor does a face covered in bite marks!
