The Leith Festival

The Leith Festival began in 2002 and is a lively and popular part of the Edinburgh calendar. The annual celebration of Leith has grown rapidly over the years and in 2005 attracted nearly 24,000 visitors.

The Festival takes places during June and involves many local venues and businesses - as well, of course, as the Leithers themselves. There's even a Leith FM radio station broadcasting on 87.7 during the Festival.

In addition to showcasing local talent, the Leith Festival also attracts big names such as Irvine Welsh.

2006

The 2006 Leith Festival will take place from 2-11 June. During this time, over 100 events will take place in over 50 venues spread across a square mile of the city. For the official launch party the Festival reportedly plans to use the space at Ocean Terminal previously used to host the MTV Awards.

The Festival closes on June 10th with a Gala Day. This will start with a gala parade "Walking the Walk" from Pilrig Street, down Leith Walk and on to the Links where there will be stalls and events. I was at the Gala Day in 2005 and thotorughly enjoyed it - I plan to be there again in 2006.
