Easter

What is the Origin of Easter?

Like so many of our modern Western festivals, Easter has its roots in ancient pagan tradition.

According to the 8th century historian known as the "Venerable Bede", the word "Easter" and the associated festival derived from the Germanic goddess Oestre. Eostre was a fertility goddess from whom we derive the word "oestrogen". Eostre's main festival was in the spring, a time associated with rebirth and renewal.

The origin of Easter is thus a springtime pagan fertility festival. This is reflected in our modern symbolism - the significance of the Easter Bunny and the Easter Egg become obvious. This also explains why the early Christians chose Eostre's festival for their "embrace and extend" strategy. The rebirth motif fits well with the Christian religious teachings.

When is Easter Day?

Easter today is what is known as a moveable feast - the exact date varies from year to year. Offically Easter Sunday falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox.

When is Easter 2008?

The date for the Western 2008 Easter Sunday will be March the 23rd.
