The History of Halloween
The tradition and rituals of Halloween go back long before Christianity, many of the customs we know today having ancient roots. The history of Halloween probably goes back at least to the Celts.
Origin
The origin of Halloween was probably the Celtic festival of Samhain. The start of winter was represented by Samhain, which took place about the time we now celebrate Halloween. It seems that the pagan festival of Samhain was taken up by the Romans after they conquered the British Celts. Samhain was probably merged with Feralia, a festival to honour the dead which originally took place some months later, and also with the Roman harvest festival of goddess Pomona. This merged Roman festival was itself incorporated by the Christians and rebranded as All Saints Day.
All Hallows
All Saints Day was also known as All Hallows day, with the night before therefore being All Hallows Eve - which over time became shortened to Halloween. To traditional Christianity Halloween was a night of evil, not one to be celebrated as a holiday. Some people today still object to Halloween fun, however for most people modern Halloween is simply an excuse for colourful costumes and a great party!
