Halloween Party Ideas

Halloween is a great excuse for a party. As well as getting your guests to dress up spooky costumes, what else will make the event go with a scream? Here are a few ideas:

Decorations

Depending on your budget decorations can be as simple as Halloween napkins and the odd plastic spider, or as intricate as gothic candlesticks and lifesized coffins! One thing every Halloween party needs is a Jack o'Lantern. If using candles, take care and always keep them out of reach of kids.

Food

Traditional Halloween foods range from soul cakes to a full dumb supper. For younger party goers (and many adults!) you can also buy candy sweets and chocolate in a wide variety of Halloween themes. If you're into baking then cakes, cookies and biscuits can either be hand crafted or made using special Halloween moulds and mixes. A little food colouring can perform miracles!

Music

You can buy specialised music collections of spooky sounds, or make your own party compilation. A lot of classical music can sound quite atmospheric and makes for good background sound. Themes from horror films also work well, as do themes and intros to TV shows like the Twilight Zone. Or you could just go for goth tunes, many of which cover Halloween themes. You can also buy Halloween theme special effect CDs - either drop the odd scream in between tracks, or set your system up to play a random track every few minutes. Perhaps include them with ordinary music tracks on a playlist and play it in "shuffle" mode.

Games

As well as traditional Halloween games like apple bobbing almost any party game can be made into a Halloween game with a little imagination - for example pass the parcel with novelties such as rubber spiders hidden between some of the sheets.

Stories

Sitting in the darkness telling ghost stories is a great way of scaring yourselves and getting into the Halloween mood! Some people are better at telling spooky tales than others, don't force anyone to speak in public if they're uncomfortable doing so. For many people, public speaking is more a scary than a boatload of spiders, bats and ghosts!
