Love Spells

Love and hate are two of the strongest human emotions, so it's not surprising that, next to curses, love spells are probably the most popular and most sought after forms of magic.

What Are Love Spells?

What are love spells? Why do people want such enchantments? After all, what good is love if it's created artifically through a spell? Well, motives vary. Some feel that life has unfairly kept them away from their destiny, some are seeking to regain a lost partner, some are simply unable to cope with love that's unrequited. Not all uses of love spells are non-consensual: in some cases people who buy them are seeking to spice up or save an existing relationship. The term love is also sometimes as a euphemism for fertility, especially in a pagan context.

There's also a school of thought that says love spells have no direct effect on the target, instead they affect the user, increasing confidence and attentiveness which in turn makes true romance more possible. According to this theory it isn't the spell that is powerful but the belief in the spell - a belief that can be intensified by the use of ritual and props such as candles and incense.

It's not for me to make any judgements but I would just urge that before you buy or use any spells you think carefully about your motives. As the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for. Whether you call it magic or psychology, these things can be powerful and can really work. For better or worse.

History

Romantic enchantments occur throughout recorded history and are a feature of much mythology - what is Cupid's Arrow but a form of love spell?

The example of Cupid demonstrates how the word "spell" mustn't be taken too literally. The magic can be contained in an object, either through virtue of its ingredients or by having an enchantment cast upon it. Although Wiccan style magic is proabbly the best known when it comes to romance there are many others.

Potions

One of the most common examples of a love spell encapsulated in the object is the classic love potion. The ancient Roman Apuleius, author of Metamorphoses, was accused of using love potions to enchant a wealthy women whom he then married. His defence in the case was the famous Apologia (A Discourse on Magic).

Magic has often been associated with herbalism. It's possible that many of the early potions were some form of aphrodisiac and should more accurately have been called lust potions. Another possibility is that they were an early equivalent of rohypnol.

Charms

Another common form of magical aid to romance is the love charm. Sometimes this is carried or worn by the spell user, often acting as a form of focus for thoughts of the beloved. At other times it may be given as a gift to the beloved to forge a bond between the two.

There is another version of the charm whereby some physical token such as a lock of hair is contained within. This is, of course, a standard romantic practice regardless of any magical overtones, however it can also be the foundation for a less savoury voodoo-style form of spell. It's easy to cross the line from white to black.
