EEG Biofeedback - Neurofeedback

Important Note: This is not a medical site and does not offer medical advice or personal advice of any form. Always consult a doctor regarding medical matters.
EEG Biofeedback - also known as Neurofeedback or Neuro Biofeedback - is one of the more sophisticated forms of the technique and requires more advanced equipment. Typically EEG biofeedback is used in clinical applications and by therapy professionals. It is far less commonly available to buy in home units.

What Is EEG Biofeedback?

The term EEG stands for electroencephalograph. This is a device that measures brain activity. Sensors are placed on the head which measure and display the level of brain activity at different frequencies. The four main frequency bands are:

  • Gamma
Greater than 24 Hertz, usually around 40 and beyond
  • Beta
    12 to 24 Hertz
  • Alpha
    8 to 12 Hertz
  • Theta
    4 to 8 Hertz
  • Delta
    Up to 4 Hertz
Note that the bands are only approximate, different people use slightly different cut-off points.

EEG Biofeedback machines thus works by investigating brain waves directly - hence the term neuro - rather than indirectly. The system tells you about the activity of the brain itself rather than looking at the effects of brain activity on the rest of the body.

One of the interesting research areas for neurofeedback is its possible use with children suffering from Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD). Such therapist led training and treatment often takes place under the guise of a video game.

Therapeutic intervantion assisted by EEG biofeedback is known as neurotherapy.

QEEG

Another term used is "QEEG". This stands for "Quantitative EEG" and refers to using digital technology to analyse the raw brain wave data. This provides more information than could be obtained from simply looking at the brain wave patterns directly on a monitor.
