EMG Biofeedback

EMG stands for electromyography. This measures the electrical response of the muscles when contracting. This can recorded on an electromyogram.

EMG Biofeedback normally uses surface EMG. The electrical response is measured with pads placed on the skin rather than the more invasive medical diagnostic procedure of needle electromyography. The results can be displayed visually and/or indicated by a tone sound.

By indirectly measuring muscle contraction, EMG readings can be used to examine stress and tenseness. This allows the user to see and/or hear their level of muscular tension - and hopefully gain some control over it.

EMG biofeedback is often used by medical professionals in the treatment of stress related issues, both reducing long term tension and assisting in short term relaxation. It has also been used to assist people suffering from or at risk of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).

This form of biofeedback is also sometimes used in the treatment of a range of conditions as diverse as as migraine and incontinence. It should always be used as recommended by your doctor and not seen as a replacement for more conventional therapy.
