Biofeedback Equipment
Important Note: This is not a medical site and does not offer medical advice or personal advice of any form. Always consult a doctor regarding medical matters. In theory it is possible to use biofeedback treatment without any equipment, simply by becoming more aware of your body and how it reacts. You could even begin biofeedback training with a device as simple as a thermometer.
Monitors
In practice most people prefer to use biofeedback machines to monitor and review the way their brain, mind and body are reacting. It's important to remember that the device isn't "doing" anything, it's simply monitoring and reporting on your state to help you change it.There are many different monitor systems on the market and they vary tremendously in price and features, from simple home units for personal use to the best sophisticated research machines. You can purchase both stand-alone, pocket-sized units and sophisticated multi-function devices that integrate with your PC and include detailed analysis software. The best buy for you will depend on both the functionality you require and the depth of your pockets!
Home biofeedback equipment and techniques can be useful for personal development objectives such as relaxation, improved concentration, self control, etc. They're also used for pain control and relief from various illness symptoms. However if you are suffering from a medical condition then you should first discuss it with your doctor.
GSR Biofeedback Devices
Many of the affordable home use biofeedback machines for sale today work by taking measurements of the skin. The most common of these is Galvanic Skin Response (GSR). These are normally available to buy at a good price, however as always you tend to get what you pay for.GSR works by attaching small electrodes to the skin and translating the signals into a sensory indicator - very often sound. For example, a GSR unit might emit a tone that changes in pitch and/or volume to tell you about the level of stress being detected via the skin.
EEG & EMG Biofeedback Devices
More advanced biofeedback units use EEG biofeedback (neurofeedback) and/or EMG biofeedback (muscular activity). These cost more and usually provide more functions - for example digital readouts, time based averages and min-max facilities. The advanced EEG and EMG biofeedback machines are often intended for use by or in conjunction with a professionally qualified practitioner rather than by an individual alone.
