Biofeedback FAQ
Answers to some of the Frequently Asked Questions about biofeedback.
|
- What Is Biofeedback?
Biofeedback is a technique for training the mind and body, telling you about how they are
reacting and helping you to become aware of and take
control of normally unconscious autonomic processes.
- How Does Biofeedback Work?
Biofeedback works by monitoring certain bodily functions and turning them into
easily recognisable signals - for instance a rising or falling tone. Once we become aware
of these signals we can over time learn to control them. The exact mechanism remains
uncertain, however there is much evidence that biofeedback does work.
- What Are the Uses and Benefits of Biofeedback?
Biofeedback therapy is used by some medical practitioners to assist in the treatment of a number of
conditions including high blood pressure and stress related disorders. If you have a
medical condition, always consult your doctor for information. For home use, biofeedback is often used to
aid relaxation and concentration. There are even biofeedback games on the market!
- Do I Need to Buy Special Biofeedback Equipment?
In theory, no. To an extent we all do biofeedback regularly - consciously calming
ourselves down, or preparing ourselves for a challenge, or simply looking in the mirror
and deciding to eat more healthily! Some people advocate a non-mechanistic approach to biofeedback
based on self-awareness. However if you're not used to meditation and self-analysis you
might find this dificult. Many people prefer to use a simple home biofeedback machine and
this equipment is available to buy online from a number of different manufacturers and
suppliers.
- Is Biofeedback the Same as Neurofeedback?
Sort of. Neurofeedback is in fact a specific type of biofeedback - EEG
biofeedback.
- What is EEG Biofeedback?
EEG stands for electroencephalogram.
EEG biofeedback - neurofeedback - works by having sensors attached to the head pick up
brain wave activity and tell you directly about how the brain is reacting. EEG biofeedback is usually a top of the range option.
- What is EMG Biofeedback?
EMG stands for electromyography and refers to the measurement of muscle activity by pads
placed on the skin. It is often used for relaxation training. See: EMG
biofeedback.
- What is GSR Biofeedback?
GSR stand for galvanic skin response. GSR biofeedback works by measuring skin resistance
through electrodes placed on the skin, often on the fingers. GSR is the most common form
of biofeedback found in home devices and is often used in biofeedback games.
