BiofeedbackMind Over MatterBiofeedback (also known as neurofeedback when EEG biofeedback is being used) sounds like science fiction - it's basically "mind over matter", to be precise "mind over body". In fact biofeedback is a perfectly respectable scientific phenomenom. It's not new - the word biofeedback (bio + feedback)was first coined back in the 1960s. The idea became very popular in the 1970s when a huge number of claims were made for it. Many of these have since - sadly - proved to be unfounded, however the technique still has many useful, proven applications.
What is Biofeedback?Biofeedback is essentially the process of learning to control aspects of our body which are usually outside of our control. Examples include using a biofeedback machine to assist in dealing with stress, pain control and blood pressure. EEG biofeedback has also been studied for use with children suffering from Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).Biofeedback works by monitoring the condition we are trying to change, either directly (as in the case of blood pressure) or indirectly (as in the case of stress). This monitoring is translated into a simple sensual cue, usually light and/or sound, to give us information about what is happening internally. As our autonomic processes change, these changes are indicated by positive visual cues which tell us how we are doing. The brain reacts to these and reinforces the positive changes - thus setting up a feedback loop. Over time the brain learns how to better control the body. Biofeedback is used in various forms of therapy but is not a replacement for conventional medical treatment - always consult your doctor for medical information.
Biofeedback EquipmentIn theory it would be possible to use biofeedback without buying any equipment, simply by becoming more aware of your body and how it reacts. In practice most people find this extremely difficult and prefer to use one of the many biofeedback machines on the market. These machines vary tremendously in price and features, from simple home units for personal use to sophisticated research machines. You can even buy a biofeedback based "inner active" computer adventure!
