DMILSDirect Mental Interaction With Living SystemsThe acronym DMILS stands for Direct Mental Interaction with Living Systems. It's basically mind over living matter.The basic term is rather vague and could cover a number of things not normally considered psi related. For example, biofeedback is an example of mind affecting a mental system yet this is not a parapsychological phenomenon. Most people use the term DMILS in a psi context to refer to affecting an external living system. Even with that qualification, psychic DMILS can still be slippery to define. For example, changing someone else's body temperature or pulse rate could be a result of some form of direct action on the body or could possibly a result of sending highly charged thoughts and emotions into the subconscious. And is the staring effect a result of DMILS or telepathy? Similarly some people would class psychic healing as DMILS whilst others would not. Experiments are sometimes carried out with animal rather than human subjects to reduce or eliminate the possibility of thought transference as a mechanism.
Bio-PKThe clearest examples of DMILS are ones where an observable macro-level reaction occurs in the target organism. These cases are sometimes called biological-PK or bio-PK.The media, in particular movies, love to dramatise extreme levels of bio-PK - very often in ways that are distinctly unpleasant! However most research into the subject involves inducing low level responses, often in autonomic systems. Whether these forms of DMILS effect are bio-PK are the result of some form of telepathy they are still interesting. If rather less exciting than an exploding head!
