WWF Spots New Mammal in Borneo

Tuesday, December 06, 2005

Members of the WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature) have photographed what could be a new species in the woods of Borneo.

Two photographs were taken of the possible newly discovered cryptid. The creature is a mammal, larger than a cat and a dark red colour. It has small ears and a long tail. It is believed to be carniverous. It was spotted in the Kayan Mentarang National Park.

Experts have suggested that the new species could be from the viverrid family which includes the mongoose and civets.

The creature could easily have died out without ever having been discovered. Stuart Chapman of the WWF says:

"This discovery highlights the urgent need to conserve the unique forests in the Heart of Borneo, as this creature - whatever it is - hasn’t been seen since the pictures were taken and is therefore likely to occur in very low numbers"
