USA Today reports more evidence - if any were needed - of the intelligence of cats.
Gary Rosheisen of Columbus, Ohio suffers from osteoporosis. When he fell out of his wheelchair recently he wasn't wearing his medical-alert necklace and couldn't reach the emergancy cord or telephone.
To the rescue sprang Roseheisen's cat, Tommy. Tommy pressed the speed-dial button and called 911. On receiving a "dead air" call, the emergency services called back and when they received no reply decided to investigate. A police officer found Roseheisen on the floor and Tommy sitting next to the telephone.
Roseheisen had beeen trying to train the cat to call 911 - it looks as if it might have worked.
