Green Glow-in-the-Dark PigsFriday, January 13, 2006
The BBC reports that scientists in Taiwan have finally achieved the scientific breakthrough the world has been waiting for: they have bred three green pigs. That glow in the dark. Yes, really. These aren't the first green pigs - but they are the first where all the internal organs are green as well as the skin. There is, of course, a serious motive for this. The pigs have been bred as research animals. Apparently their green genetic material will make it easier to spot during, for example, stem cell research. The pigs are "transgenic", ie a product of genetic manipulation. They were created by adding jellyfish DNA to pig embryos. These pigs won't be eaten. But who knows? Maybe one day we will all be tucking into Eggs And Green Ham. This is not a medical site Nothing on this blog constitutes personal advice. Always discuss medical matters with your doctor.
