No, this isn't an item about the personal hygene of any awards nominees. It's a list of the stars deemed most likely to be home to intelligent alien life.
Dr. Margaret Turnbull of the Carnegie Institution, Washington DC has been narrowing down the candidate list of stars. From the possible "bazillions" she initially identitified a shortlist of around 17,000. She has now produced a list of the top five most likely candidates. These are:
- Beta CVn - HD 10307 - HD 211 415 - 18 Sco - 51 Pegasus
These were chosen by applying a number of criteria which Turnbull believes affects the chance of intelligent life having developed including factors such as age, mass and composition of the stars.
The list should help astronomers and organisations such as SETI to concentrate their limited resources on the potentially most likely homes for ET.
