Dracula's Castle Reclaimed by Owner

Friday, May 26, 2006

Dracula's castle - Bran Castle in Transylvania - is to be returned to its owner today.

Bran Castle is a 13th century gothic fortress high up on a rocky Transylvanian mountain. It was reportedly the inspiration for Bram Stoker's "Dracula" vampire novel. Vlad the Impaler himself is also thought to have stayed there. It is today one of Romania's top tourist attractions - you can even buy Dracula wine. Red, I assume.

The real owner is actually one Dominic von Habsburg, an architect who lives in the New York suburbs. Habsburg is the grandson of former Romanian queen Maria. The communists seized the castle when they came to power some 60 years ago - now the Romanian government is to hand the castle back.
