Ghostly White Stag Roaming ScotlandTuesday, February 12, 2008
![]() A rare white stag described as "ghost-like" has been filmed roaming the Scottish Highlands. The exact location is being kept secret to protect the creature. Such white deer are not cryptids however they are very rare. They're not the same as albinos (which have red eyes) but are white due to a genetic disorder called leucism. The ghostly stag was spotted by staff from the John Muir Trust and photographed by Partnership Manager Fran Lockhart. Lockhart said: "It was amazing to crawl up so close to such a magnificent looking animal. He looked almost ghost like next to the group of young red stags that he was mixing with."In past centuries, seeing one of these creatures in the moonlight on a desolate Scottish hillside must have been quite scary. It's easy to imagine how such sightings could have helped give rise to many of the old tales of ghosts for which Scotland is famous.
