Guardian Angels

Many people believe that we all have a guardian angel who comes from Heaven and watches over us. Although this belief is primarily associated with the Christian religion, many other religions and cultures have similar beliefs. As far back as ancient Greece Plato mentions a similar idea in The Republic:

"All the souls had now chosen their lives, and they went in the order of their choice to Lachesis, who sent with them the genius whom they had severally chosen, to be the guardian of their lives and the fulfiller of the choice"

What Is A Guardian Angel?

The exact nature and function of guardian angels is unclear, different people have different opinions. This means that there's no definitive list agreed on by all.

A common belief is that each individual person has their own personal angel who is assigned to them at birth - your guardian and yours alone. An alternative belief is that numerous guardian are "on call" and different ones can undertake different tasks as required. They're a bit like taxis, waiting in line for the next job.

A third possibility is that "your" guardian angel could be allocated a number of different people for whom to care. Some say there are 72 angels who act as guardians this way, the name of yours depending on factors such as the day you were born.

The function of the guardian angel is also a cause of disagreement. Some people believe that they intervene actively on behalf of the person they are guarding. Others believe that they simply act as messengers carrying prayers to God. Still others see the guardian angel as a confidant and guide - sort of a spiritual life coach. This form of guardian often acts indirectly, possibly by arranging for symbols such as angel numbers.

Guardian angels are similar to the shamanistic concept as spirit guides, however one important difference is that angels are heavenly creatures whereas spirit guides can often be the souls of creatures or people once living.

The concept of the guardian angel also has similarities with the tradition of the fairy godmother.
