Nadi Astrology

Nadi - also spelt Naadi - astrology is unknown to most people in the West. Although astrology is a major part of it, Nadi is larger system that approaches a philosophy.

What Is Nadi Astrology?

Nadi astrology is a form of divination from the Indian subcontinent, most frequently associated with the Tamil Nadu regions. In Tamil the name Nadi means "in search of".

Nadi is based on the concept of predestination - an idea uncomfortable to many of us in the West. Everything that is to be has been determined by the utterances of the Lord Shiva. Nadi divination is simply an attempt to learn what has alreay been determined. Whether or not it is successul depends on whether or not the individual is predestined to learn their fate at that moment.

Unlike western astrology the core predictions have already been made. Thousands of years ago the great sages (Rishis) looked into the future and recorded the entire history of humanity and every individual. Many of these texts have now been lost and others are difficult to decipher. The Nadi process is largely concerned with trying to discover and interpret the relevant section of prophecy for a querent.

These predictions - known as Nadis - were usually written on palm leaves that have been carefully preserved. Many of these were organised and classified according to their author. Most are written in poetic language that is difficult to decipher.

Many different nadis exist and there is often debate over which are genuine and which are fakes or poor copies.

Astrology is one of the methods used to consult the Nadis. The Nadi zodiac is, like the Western one, divided into 360 degrees and 12 signs. These are further subdived into nadiamsas. Using this system the position of the heavenly bodies at birth can then be correlated with the Nadi predictions.

The astrological side of Nadi is almost always combined with thumb print identification. The Nadi astrologer takes a thumb print of the querent and uses this to try and identify the precise palm leaf that corresponds to the person. This is usually not a simple task - many of the leaves have been lost or damaged. Therefore to aid the process the astrologer also asks various questions (at this point the skeptics are probably thinking cold reading).

In these days of modern security systems it is interesting to consider that predictions made thousands of years ago and written on palm leaves may have used biometric identifiers!
