Birthstone Barbie

Just as the Queen of England has an official birthday, so does the queen of fashion Barbie (full name Barbara Millicent Roberts). Hers is March the 9th. It's impolite to ask a lady her age so let's just say that this eternally young lady is looking good.

Since she was born in March, Barbie's birthstone is the aquamarine. Although this is available to buy in a variety of colours it is usually thought of as blue or blue green.

In 1999 Mattel released the 40th anniversary Barbie (oops - just given away her age). This was a special limited edition collector's piece where Barbie wore an elegant outfit themed around aquamarine. She is dressed in aquamarine with a pale aqua skirt and darker train. Perhaps surprisingly Barbie isn't wearing aquamarine jewelry, opting instead for a golden bumblebee on her shoulder.

Of course, those who don't share Barbie's birthstone haven't been left out by her marketing department. Over the years you have been able to buy a variety of birthstone themed collections to cover every month, many of which are complete with Swarovski crystal jewelry. These are models often limited Collector Editions.

One common theme running through the Birthstone Barbie collections is elegance - this is Barbie dressed for the ball rather than for the beach.
