The Princess Cut is a relatively recent diamond cut, having been developed in the 1960s. In recent years it has become an increasingly popular cut to buy, especially in diamond jewelry such as rings and studs.

The Princess cut is favoured by some professional cutters because of its efficiency in making maximum use of the original stone.

What Is The Princess Cut?

The Princess cut is known technically as a "square modified round cut". Essentially it is a square version of the classic round Brilliant cut with sharp corners.

The Princess cut applies the Brilliant style of faceting to the square stone. The stone will usually be cut with around 76 facets. The "ideal" shape for the stone is a near square, however the Princess diamonds you can buy vary considerably in their proportions.

These cuts are sometimes star set - set with their corners at the cardinal points to give a very distinctive appearance. Popular setting materials include yellow or white gold and platinum.
