Gemology

What Is Gemology?

Gemology (sometimes spelt gemmology) is the name given to the study of gems and precious stones. There is a lot of overlap between jewelers and gemologists, however it's not necessary to be one in order to be the other. Most people take courses in gemology in order to achieve professional qualifications, however it's quite possible to study the subject without making a profession of it.

The main work of the gemologist usually revolves around identifying, grading and valuing stones. Some stones are easily identified by sight even by a novice, however in other cases there is a lot more scope for error. This is especially true as the production of synthetic gemstones becomes more sophisticated. It is increasingly becoming more difficult to distinguish a natural stone from a synthetic version. Often professional gemologists will use specialist equipment such as microscopes, refractometers and polariscopes. You can even buy computer databases and other software to assist.

The work of the gemologist goes beyond simply identifying the type of stone. Detailed analysis of its internal structure and properties - for example the nature of any inclusions - help to provide a much more accurate classification and grading of the stone.

A gemologist will not necesarily be a gem cutter or lapidary however they will usually have a knowledge of the different cuts since these are often critical factors in valuing a gem.

Please note that I am not a qualified gemologist. I'd like to learn one day but for now I'm just an interested layman.
