The Symbolism of StonesGems, Jewels and CrystalsToday most people buy gemstone jewelry mainly because they like the look of it or because of its value. However minerals, gems and stones of various sorts have traditionally had important symbolic values. This is possibly due to their connection with the earth, possibly because of their rarity. Whatever the origin of these myths and beliefs they make for fascinating reading. If nothing else, gemstones are undeniably beautiful, both in their raw uncut form and in all their polished glory. Perhaps this is because on some level they help us to feel more in touch with nature. In this day and age of plastic and neon it's comforting to be able to wear something that was created by mother nature, possibly thousands of years ago. Stones have held a place in many cultures, either believed to have power in their own right or viewed as sybols of something else. Today few people believe in most of these legends, but the stories persist. Even if we don't believe in the power of the stones, the stories give them an even greater appeal. For those interested in finding out a bit more about the history, folklore and symbolism concerning their favourite stones, I'll provide some information in these pages. I aim to cover everything from crystals through to valuable gemstones - whatever I can "dig up". Next time you browse an online gemstone jewelery store, maybe you'll look differently at some of the stuff for sale. If nothing else it might make shopping more interesting!
